Enrichment Fund Options

Thanks to PTA memberships and additional parent donations, we have been able to create an Enrichment Fund this year. Our goal for this fund is to offer enhanced school-wide learning opportunities. This year we are also hoping to increase our buying power and educational impact by teaming with the EBLS student council and their Box Top funds. After consulting teachers, Ms. Rhees, and parents we have 5 top options. We are currently researching the costs, timing and feasibility of these options. We will present the final 3 options on the student council ballot and let the students decide their priority for spending their BoxTop funds. This year we hope to use the enrichment funds to assist the student council project as necessary and then fund the other 2 options. We welcome your help in ranking the top 3. Please feel free to vote for your favorite choice in our website poll located in the blue bar at the left of the screen. If you have additional ideas, please feel free to email or phone Arthur Caplan at 797-0775 or email him at acaplan@econ.usu.edu. PTA membership dues and additional donations are making these exciting options possible. If you have not yet joined this year, we welcome your support.

CHOOSE FROM THESE FIVE OPTIONS

  1. After-School Drama Club. This club will be coordinated by two USU students from the Theatre Education Department, under the supervision of faculty advisor Robbin Black. It is for all age groups and will meet one day per week in the school auditorium right after school lets out. Members of the club will learn both the art and science of on-stage acting and behind-the-scenes organization (e.g., casting, set design, etc.). Club activities will culminate in an evening performance(s) of a play. The enrichment fund will be used to pay the USU students an hourly wage rate and for any costs associated with set design and costumes.

  2. After-School Debate Club. This club will be coordinated by students from the USU Debate Club, under the supervision of their faculty advisor. It is for third graders and higher and will meet one day per week in a designated classroom right after school lets out. Members of the club will learn both the art and science of debate. The enrichment fund will be used to pay the USU students an hourly wage rate and for any costs associated with the acquisition of debate materials.

  3. After-School Foreign Language Club. This club would be coordinated by a parent volunteer. The USU Foreign Languages Department is on a one year hiatus. It would be for all age groups and would meet one day per week in a designated classroom right after school lets out. At this point in time, a specific foreign language has not been selected. However, recommendations have already been given by parents for French, Swedish, and Chinese. Members of the club would enhance their skills in both conversational and written language. The enrichment fund would be used to pay for any costs associated with the acquisition of materials. Parent volunteers are needed to organize and run this club.

  4. New science materials for the Science Laboratory. The enrichment fund will be used to acquire supplies and instruments for the science lab, as recommended by the teachers.

  5. School-wide assemblies. We are researching a demonstration of how rocket engines work by the USU rocket club (affiliated with the Mechanical Engineering Department) and we are also researching a writing workshop by a local author. The assemblies would be "harmonized" with the teachers' curricula as much as possible. For example, the rocket engine demonstration would be coordinated with the teachers' science curricula.

Edith Bowen Fruit and Veggie Fair

Thursday, October 5, 2006
6:30 - 8:00 pm in the EBLS Cafeteria

The USU Senior Dietetics students and Edith Bowen Lab School invite you to come and explore fruits and veggies of all kinds, at the 4th annual “Fruit & Veggie Fair”. Join Old MacDonald as he investigates fruits and vegetables on the farm.

We invite the students to create an art display using fruits and vegetables. They can use fruit or vegetable and they can create whatever their imagination comes up with. The creations will be displayed that night for all to see. Then remember to bring the creations to school on Thursday, October 5th, so they can be displayed.

We hope that everyone will plan to attend and enjoy a fun, food filled evening “down on the farm”.

Top 7 Easy Things You Can Do To Enrich Our Students

Edith Bowen is a Fund Raiser Free Zone and our families won't be asked to buy or sell anything. However, we can all make some simple choices to support our students, faculty and staff.
  1. Join PTA with an extra donation
  2. PTA memberships and additional donations go directly to support learning opportunities for you and your children.

  3. Volunteer Your Time at EBLS
  4. In addition to sharing your experiences, supporting our faculty and assisting our students, the more volunteer hours we log at EBLS, the more grant money from the district for which EBLS is eligible.

  5. Wamoola for Schools
  6. If you bank with Washington Mutual Bank please enroll in their WaMoola for Schools program. A percentage of every purchase you make with your Washington Mutual Debit MasterCard or Visa Check Card will benefit EBLS. There is no cost to you to enroll. You can enroll in this program and designate Edith Bowen Lab School through a branch clerk at your next bank visit or go to http://www.wamoolaforschools.com. Last year we received $276 which helped fund a lunch time recess monitor for our children.

  7. Cream O'Weber Lids
  8. When you purchase Cream O Weber dairy products, save the lids and have your students put them in the collection box in the cafeteria. Last year these lids added over $50 to the fund for student council projects.

  9. Earn and Learn with Smith's Food
  10. This year Smith's will donate $1,000,000 to area schools and we will earn a percentage of this money based on the total amount of purchases by our families. This year the program is being re-launched and to have your shopping dollars count, every Fresh Values Card must be re-enrolled in the program. Download the Edith Bowen Smiths Parent Letter, print it, and take it with you shopping to link your Fresh Values card to our school. Even if you have enrolled in the past, we all must re-enroll to take part in the program for this coming school year. This money goes toward funding a lunch time recess monitor for our children.

  11. General Mills Box Tops for Education
  12. When you purchase a Box Top labeled product at the grocery store make sure that you save the box top label and have your students put them in the collection box in the cafeteria. These labels amounted to over $580 last year and exclusively fund student council projects.

  13. Albertson's Community Partnership Program
  14. A portion of your Albertson's shopping dollars are donated to EBLS when you enroll a Preferred Card in their community partnership program. You can enroll your card online at www.albertsons.com/cp or you can ask a cashier during your next visit and have them enroll you in the program as you checkout. The Edith Bowen Lab School number is 49001008510. These funds help fund a lunch time recess monitor.

EBLS-“Class” mailing lists

The EBLS-Class mailing list are the 21st century version of the phone tree. Except you don't need to know all the phone numbers (or in this case email addresses). Each EBLS-Class mailing list is an automated email service that allows Teachers/Parents/ EBLS Administrators/Grandparents/... to send messages to members of the list. Email messages sent to the list address are broadcast to everyone who has registered their email address with the list server. There is no need to keep track of individual email addresses. You only need to update your own email address information if it changes. There's a link at the bottom of every message from the list to the account maintenance page.

As an example to send a single message to all the parent’s in Mrs. Christian’s class send it to EBLS-Christian@lists.usu.edu. Again, to use the phone analogy it's like calling the message service and having them all the people in their Roledex. But remember messages to the list are public and do not only go to the teacher, but can be read by everyone!

To join a class mailing list:

  1. Go to http://lists.usu.edu and scroll down to the EBLS-Class to find the class list you want to join. Select the link and follow the instructions to subscribe to the list. For Class substitute the teacher’s name from the following choices: AndersonAM, AndersonPM, Christian, Cook, Coulombe, Jensen, Kyriopoulos, Lai, Nagata, Sellers, Steele, or Wallin.
  2. or send an email to EBLS-Class-request@lists.usu.edu with the word ‘subscribe’ in the subject or body of the message. Replace Class as described in (1) above (e.g., EBLS-AndersonAM-request@lists.usu.edu).

After confirming that you want to join the list you’ll get a message with additional instructions about using the list, including how to leave the list. If you have any question about the mechanics (how to send messages, etc) of the list please contact me via one of the following means.

Parking and Pickup/Dropoff Procedures

Welcome back to school! For those of you picking up your students by car at 3:00pm, we now have two options:

1. NEW this year!!! Everyone is now welcome to park in the corner B lot off of 1200 E and walk over to your children at their pickup location. You enter this corner B lot directly off of 1200 E just west of Aggie Ice Cream. You may park in this lot during pickup hours without a permit. Parents can then walk through the neighboring R1 lot to the sidewalk north of the soccer field and to the classroom designated spot for your child. You then escort your children back to your car. Children will not be allowed to walk to your car without you. We are excited about no waiting in the queue, no idling of the car, no long wait on the driveway by the cemetery as you try to leave, getting a little bit of exercise with beautiful views and maybe even a nice conversation with other parents. What a deal!!!

2. If you choose the traditional drive through the pickup queue please follow the designated path with no short cuts through the parking lots. If you come before the children arrive from school, we ask that you either pull over to the curb and stop your car, or continue to move and circle through the queue so that we don't create pickup gridlock. Students will not be allowed to leave the sidewalk without your safe escort.

If you have questions concerning the drop off/pick up procedure, please ask your child’s teacher for further instructions. We encourage you to limit the amount of time that you idle your car while waiting for pickup which will be a benefit in the air quality for all.

Ridesharing with other families is encouraged. A school wide class list with addresses and phone numbers is provided in the EBLS Parent Handbook/Family Directory if you are looking for other Edith Bowen families living in or near your neighborhood. You might also check out or leave your rideshare information on the Carpool Board.
